Navy SEAL Admiral's Rare, Public Punishment Military.com Sun, Mar 27 1:00 AM PDT Sign in to like Reblog on Tumblr Tweet The career death of Rear Adm. Brian Losey, the Navy SEAL leader being forced to retire after his promotion was blocked in the Senate, marks the most public punishment ever at the top rank of the elite SEALs, who are known for running below the radar with their combat missions and internal business. Even more tension between Congress and the SEALs may be looming. Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Alpine, said this week that he will oppose the nomination of Losey's replacement, Rear Adm. Tim Szymanski. Hunter told The San Diego Union-Tribune that he has concerns about the incoming SEAL commander's past performance on contracting, training and acquisitions. He didn't elaborate on the alleged problems. Szymanski ... Read more

The new Self Defence Force base on the island of Yonaguni is at the western extreme of a string of Japanese islands in the East China Sea, 150 km (90 miles) south of the disputed islands known as the Senkaku islands in Japan and the Diaoyu in China. China has raised concerns with its neighbors and in the West with its assertive claim to most of the South China Sea where the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei have overlapping claims. ...

North Korea propaganda video depicts nuclear attack on Washington Detroit Free Press 22 hours ago Sign in to like Reblog on Tumblr Tweet North Korea released a dramatic propaganda video Saturday called "Last Chance" that depicts a nuclear strike on Washington, complete with animation of a missile slamming into the earth near the Lincoln Memorial. The four-minute video, backed by a hyper musical score reminiscent of TV Westerns of the 1960s, includes a mushroom cloud and an American flag going up in flames. It was posted to the YouTube channel of D.P.R.K. Today, a North Korean website, and includes a rapid-fire catalog of "humiliating defeats" meted out to the United States over the years, including the North’s capture of an American ship, the Pueblo, in 1968. "If the American imperialists provoke us a bit, we will not hesitate to slap them with a pre-emptive nuclear strike,” read the Korean ...

World Report: North Korea ships under Sierra Leone flag issued warning UPI Fri, Mar 25 8:08 PM PDT Sign in to like Reblog on Tumblr Tweet SEOUL, March 25 (UPI) -- The government of Sierra Leone stated North Korean ships sailing under its flag have been issued a warning. Sierra Leone's ministry of maritime affairs said the warning issued on March 17 was targeting the owners and managers of North Korean vessels operating under the Sierra Leone flag. The warning was the result of European Union, U.N. and U.S. sanctions, the government said, according to Voice of America. North Korean ships have been known to sail under foreign flags, in order to evade regulation. The maritime ministry emphasized vessels of Sierra Leone nationality should be familiar with the sanctions list when entering foreign ports or registering ships. Enforcement ...

Yellowstone supervolcano eruptions were even bigger than we thought The Christian Science Monitor Sat, Mar 26 9:09 AM PDT Sign in to like Reblog on Tumblr Tweet A recent study published in the Geological Society of America Bulletin identifies an area of great volcanic activity along the Snake River Plain between Oregon and Yellowstone. While scientists have long known that the supervolcano now under Yellowstone left a trail of mega-eruptions across the Pacific Northwest, an international research team has found evidence of only 12 distinct eruptions, contradicting earlier theories that the eruptions were more numerous and less extreme. “The size and magnitude of this newly defined eruption is as large, if not larger, than better known eruptions at Yellowstone,” said the study’s lead author, Dr. Thomas Knott, in a University of Leicester press release, “and ...

South China Sea: Taiwan enters power struggle CNN 14 hours ago Sign in to like Reblog on Tumblr Tweet Island, not a rock Taiping Island "is entitled to an exclusive economic zone of 200 nautical miles," outgoing Taiwan president Ma Ying-jeou told journalists on Wednesday -- which gives a country special rights over the seabed, and marine resources like fish. However, there at least six countries laying competing claims to different parts of the South China Sea, including Vietnam, Taiwan, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei. China, with a large U shape on its maps, lays claim to virtually all of the contested waters. To cement its stance, Beijing has been building man-made islands atop seven reefs it controls in the Spratly archipelago, a series of atolls far closer to the Philippines ... Read more

As Korean tensions rise, rival leaders get personal Hwang Sung-Hee, AFP 9 hours ago Comments Sign in to like Reblog on Tumblr Share Tweet Email Escalating military tensions on the divided Korean peninsula took an increasingly personal turn on Friday, with the leaders of North and South each threatening the other's destruction. For North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un that meant overseeing a long-range artillery drill, simulating a strike on the offices and official residence of his South Korean counterpart, Park Geun-Hye. Park, meanwhile, countered by accusing Kim of leading his country down an ultimately destructive path and stressing the need for a drastic change of direction by the regime in Pyongyang. Tensions between the two Koreas have been rising since North Korea carried out its fourth nuclear test in January, and a satellite rocket launch a month later that was widely seen as a disguised ballistic missile test....

ndonesia urges Chinese vessels not to breach its territorial waters By Bernadette Christina Munthe, Reuters Thu, Mar 24 2:13 AM PDT Comments Sign in to like Reblog on Tumblr Share Tweet Email By Bernadette Christina Munthe JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesia on Thursday urged Chinese ships not to enter its territorial waters, days after it protested against what it called a breach of its sovereignty by a Chinese coastguard ship. Indonesia is not embroiled in rival claims with China over the South China Sea and has instead seen itself as an "honest broker" in disputes between China and the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei. But an incident last Saturday involving an Indonesian patrol boat, and a Chinese coastguard vessel and fishing boat in what Indonesia said was its waters has angered it and led to it questioning its work to promote peace. Chief security minister Luhut Pandjaitan said Indonesia would maintain good rela...
