This photo shows forks of lighting striking a plume of volcanic ash in Hawaii, turning the sky incredible shades of pink and purple.
Taken in the third week of October, the stunning picture shows ash emitting from the Halemaumau crater in Hawaii’s volcano national park.
Jon Mikan, a 34-year-old photographer based in Hawaii, snapped the incredible images in the island’s iconic volcano village.
He said: “It’s one of the worst lighting storms we’ve ever had in the village.
"I was scared to get out of my car because the lightning was so severe but I knew I would regret it if I didn’t give it a shot.
"I set up my tripod and stayed as low to the ground as I possibly could but what I witnessed that night was a once in a life time experience – there’s no doubt about that.
"I was able to get a few shots off before the lighting moved on and the rain came in but I’ll never forget it – it was spectacular.”
